Week in review: October 24 - 28

Whoosh...and just like that the month of October is in the books and the fun and excitement of Halloween is quickly on the way!  This week was another productive one with all the kids continuing to give me their best efforts in class.

As a class we have talked at length about the importance of respecting others and how our actions are representative of the people we are wanting to be.  With that said, we had a great health class earlier this week where we talked about the concept of respecting ourselves, and how important it is that we feel proud of the things that we are learning, saying and doing - this week was definitely one of those respecting ourselves moments!  It was a week where the "learning lights" were constantly popping on as concepts became clearer and the work suddenly became easier although the questions hadn't really changed.

It was a week where the social side of the classroom blossomed and interactions became more genuine ad purposeful - a personal highlight was watching 2 guys, who may have been considered underdogs, team up and then proceed to rock the Science unit review game (our Waste kahoot).  It was great to see their spirited teamwork and excitement bubble over to the other teams and inspire them - if only to make them work harder to try and catch them! Simply a great week!

And now onto the curricular stuff...

In Math this week we continued to build our base of knowledge with basic multiplication facts.  It is this base that will allow us to tackle more challenging concepts a little further down the line so we are really working on getting down the rules and "quick tricks" that can help us increase both our accuracy and comprehension.  Thus far we have tackled all the fact tables between 0 and 6, and are consistently using these facts to tackle the creation of arrays, standard problems, and picture problems.  Whenever possible check out the websites I had posted last week to give some extra drill and kill practice with the basic facts - the more they use the facts in problems, the quicker they will develop the desired immediate recall of the products.

In Language Arts we continued to work with the parts of speech - nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, suffixes and prefixes. In conjunction with our weekly spelling words the class is able to use their words in a variety of different games/activities throughout the week that help them apply their knowledge to identify each of these features.  Exciting news is that this week also marked the move to the premium account for our Spelling City account (letter came home on Wednesday with the new login information) meaning the kids now have access to an even greater number of activities that support of studies in class.

In Science we concluded our study of Waste and our World this week with a couple of at-home assignments which I hope reinforced many of the concepts we had been discussing in class with regards to hazardous waste and recycling. It has been a great unit of study, and watching how many of the students attitudes have changed and observing how many of them are now active classroom recycle'rs (i.e. even reminding their classmates to recycle), reinforces the intended unit message that ever generation plays an important part in helping to change people's thinking towards protect the environment for future generations.

Beginning next week our new unit of study will be Wheels and Levers, involving the study of Simple Machines and how they can be used to make work easier and more efficient.  This another great unit will plenty of hands-on learning for our kinesthetic crew!

Social Studies this week has been all about the presentations and our Alberta Regions Project.  We are just a few days into the presentations and those students who have had an opportunity to share have done a good job at presenting their slide shows.  A hint of advice for future presenters would be for them to be able to summarize their slide's information so that they can give their audience just the main, important points quickly and concisely.

**  To those students who who were still missing some of their information, a reminder that all presentations given the extension are due on Monday, October 31.  Any presentations still missing information after this date will be marked as incomplete and graded accordingly.  So use the extra time wisely and get the projects finished. **

Finally to wrap up the week on a spooky note...a little Halloween Art as modelled by the students of 4H!

Halloween Information
With Halloween just days away here is some classroom information with regards to the big day. Come Monday the 31st it will be classroom business as usual in the morning with regular classes being held as per usual until noon.

Students are welcome to wear their costumes in the afternoon and will be given time to change during the lunch hour recess.  Much like other schools and as with every year, costume accessories that could be considered violent and/or weapons (i.e. guns, swords, axes etc.) should be left at home.  We will be holding a school-wide costume parade in the afternoon so everyone will get a chance to show off their creative costumes!

Finally a huge thank you goes out to those families that are supplying the treats for our afternoon party - the treats are always a hit with the class and definitely help make the event more memorable.  If you were one of the "treat families" selected this first round, please do remember to send your treat on Monday with your child.

Week in Review: October 17 -21

It was another great week of learning and fun is in the books.  The class continues to make great strides and consistently strive to meet our class expectations in terms of both academics and our mutual respect for each others abilities.  It was a packed week featuring tests, group collaboration, investigation, presentations, guest speakers and of course the excitement of our grand opening celebration!  Thank you to all those parents that were able to attend our celebration assembly, it was great to see so many parents taking time out of the daily schedules to share in our excitement.

Now onto the curricular stuff and what we have been up to in class this week...

In Math this week we wrapped up the Number Operations involving Regrouping unit and had our unit exam.  The overall performance of the class was quite good and the student's results were indeed reflective of their individual strengths and areas of continued growth.  As a class the overall average on the exam was 74/82 or roughly 90%...so there is definitely a strong base upon which to transition into other Math concepts.

On Friday we introduced our next Math unit involving Multiplication.  As a class we have already gone over strategies to tackle equations involving multiples of 0, 1, and 2 and how the concept of multiplication is nothing more than fancy repeated addition.

As with all Math concepts if you are wanting your son or daughter to practice Multiplication facts at home and help build that base of knowledge here are a few on-line resources that help with gaining accuracy (aka correct answers) and increasing fluency (aka speed):
  • http://www.multiplication.com/games/play/granny-prix-multi
  • http://www.multiplication.com/games/play/sketchs-world-multiplication
  • http://www.multiplication.com/games/play/knock-down-multiplication
The above sites are good in that they offer repeated practice but provide it in a form that is more fun and engaging.

In Language Arts we continued work on word attack strategies and how language features can help with the deciphering of unknown words.  The weekly spelling words will continue to be posted on the Spelling City website (https://www.spellingcity.com/MrTHenderson4H/), with our weekly tests being taken every Friday unless otherwise stated.

Next week all the kids will have the opportunity to take part in formal reading assessments.  The directed reading assessment will assist in identifying approximate reading fluency and comprehension levels.

The testing helps identify the students' ZPD or zone of proximal development.  This is the zone in which they are able to read with an element of challenge but not so tough as to create frustration or interfere with comprehension of the story.  With this information we will be setting up guided reading groups which will allow for more focused reading practice in class.

Science continues to examine the topic of Waste and Our World.  This week our hands-on examination of garbage and the physical sorting of waste into specific categories for classification.  It has indeed been enlightening for the students to see how classroom activities can greatly influence the amount of waste produced on any given day and how the targeted actions of a group can greatly reduce the amount of waste produced through active practicing of the 3Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle!

Hard at work sorting and classifying...

Next week our waste collection observations will  be used to create digital Google drawing projects aimed at sharing information and informing classes about their waste production tendencies and possible ways they can reduce their environmental footprint.

This past week in Social Studies we continued to examine Alberta this week touching on topics related to climate, natural resources, and factors that can influence community growth and change.

A quick reminder that the Alberta Regions Project is due on Monday, October 24th.

Our project-based research project will be covering many curricular goals related to the students' investigation of the six specific geographic regions within Alberta.  By collecting information and answering questions in relation to their region's location within the province, the physical topography of the region; the climate of their region; major cities within the region; leisure and recreation activities; native animals and also types of vegetation found within their regions they are building learning connections that can lead to greater understanding.  In checking through the projects there are many that have done a great job thus far.

Upcoming Date and Events:

Friday, October 28 - Science Unit Exam (new date, shifted back a day)
Monday, October 31 - Class Halloween Party (PM).  Thank you to the parent room reps for sharing the information with everyone and coordinating the party treats.

Week in Review: October 11 - 14

It was a tad shorter week this week but we still managed to somehow pack in a week's worth of fun and activity.  We shook off the turkey hangover quickly and covered new concepts in Social Studies, Science and Health, while continuing to build and increase fluency and comprehension with existing concepts in Math and Language Arts.  As you may have noticed the snow is definitely falling as with the temperatures (guess Mother Nature decided to skip Fall) so please ensure your child is dressing for the weather.  With winter clothing there is always a bundle of items that somehow make their way into the lost and found.  Reuniting these items with their rightful owners is always easier if names are written on the items - so please grab a marker and scribble in your child's name.  Writing on names is a way cheaper option than having to hike out to the mall and re-buying 18 pairs of gloves, 7 toques, and 4 pairs of ski pants!

and now on to the curricular stuff...

In Math we continued to work with number operations and gaining further fluency and accuracy with the regrouping of  numbers featuring 10s of thousands.  The unit test for both the addition and subtraction sections will be this coming Thursday, October 20th.

Students will be bringing home their class workbooks on Monday to give them some extra at-home practice questions to go over in preparation for the exam.  These question booklets do not need to be returned to the class as they have been reviewed and checked over prior to being sent home.
Our next unit of study will be the topic of repeated addition aka multiplication!

In Language Arts this past week we focused on again on story writing and examined the effective use of story features such as main and supporting characters, setting development, story problems and solutions - as well as further vocabulary development involving the use of adjectives as a way of adding detail and interest to writing.  Next week we will be starting our first novel study, James and the Giant Peach.  With the novel study we will be able to continue our story work and be able to tie it directly to a story and think about what the author was doing when he wrote it.

In Science the thrill of our Red Wiggler worms and our vermi-composter has really helped highlight how we as a class could cut down on our environmental footprint by reducing the amount of food waste that is directed to the landfill daily.

To help us further highlight how people's direct actions can increase or help reduce waste we will be starting a one week Science project to run in conjunction with the Alberta Recycling Councils Waste Reduction Week, which runs from October 17th through to the 21st.  During the following week our class will be collecting the daily waste from four different classrooms.  Each bag of waste is dumped, sorted into specific categories of waste (paper, plastic, glass, metal, food waste (organics) and other); and then weighed and recorded.  This collected data is tallied up for each of the classes.  Using this "garbage" data we as class will undoubtedly be able to recognize what materials contributed the most to the grand total of waste as well as identifying materials that were potentially recycled better than others in each individual room.

Ultimately as a final unit project each team of garbage researchers will be responsible for then using Google Draw software to create posters for their respective classrooms which will highlight areas of strength as well as areas in need of improvement with regards to waste management.

In Social Studies we continued our study of geographic features within Alberta and worked to further highlight similarities and differences within each region based upon individual region profiles related to land forms, weather, and other individual features.  This week we were also able to check in on everyone's progress with the at-home Alberta Regions Project and offer some in-class time to fine tune (or get started) everyone's projects.  Reminder that the due date for the project is October 24th and student presentations will commence that day.

Upcoming Important Dates

Week in Review: October 3rd - 7th

Well the first week of October was blur of activity and fun, here's hoping the remaining weeks are equally as productive!  With the arrival of October has come a definite shift in the temperatures outside, please ensure that everyone is dressing for the weather and prepared for the chilliness that sometimes accompanies recess time.  Nothing worse than numb fingers trying to hold onto monkey bars!

And now the curricular stuff...

In Math we are in the final days of our study on addition and subtraction of multiple
digit numbers with problems involving the regrouping or trading of digits.  Our daily lessons are now primarily review of specific types of questions (ie. trading across zeros) and further individual practice in preparation for our first unit exam.

Our unit exam will take place on Friday, October 14th.  Prior to this date I will be sending home any unfinished class work to be used as extra test practice.

In Language Arts we have changed up our individual silent reading slightly in that we have added another option for the kids to use when engaged in their reading.  We now have access to the Epic! program which gives the kids access to thousands of different titles and genres of reading materials.  The program also offers comprehension activities as well as educational videos which provide the option of also listening to stories.

Our weekly activities with our spelling words continues to go well, and it shows in everyone's performances on the weekly spelling tests.  Everyone did really well on today's longer review test.  With the next five lists you will notice that the challenge of the words begins to increase as well as the number of words (15 vs. 10).  Continue with the at-home practice as  it undoubtedly helps with retention.

In Science we have continued our study of Waste and our World and have shifted our focus towards looking at the biodegradability of items.  Did you know glass takes a million years to decompose?  It is essentially non-biodegradable...so recycle all those glass jars!

Of course the biggest fun we have been having lately is watching our lovely decomposition wall!  There are definitely some great examples of decomposers at work...students can easily identify those foods that decompose quicker than others. Here are a couple pics of our fuzzy favourites.

Social Studies this week has focused on all the different elements that can be found within Alberta's six geographic regions.  This week we discussed the many waterways that traverse their way through the province and how these rivers were important in determining where first nation people and early settlers within Alberta would establish their communities and villages.  Later in the week we talked about some of the animals and plants that can be found within each region.  All of the information this week was presented as a way of providing additional support for the at-home social projects - that should be starting to take shape with at least a few regions having been completed.

Mental Health Day was held this week on Friday.  What a great opportunity for the kids to experience a variety of different activities all aimed at improving and/or maintaining positive mental health.  With the day's events the students were all divided up into multi-grade level groups (grades 1 through 4) and then given the opportunity to take part in collaborative activities involving:

  • Music
  • Collaborative games
  • Imagination Station
  • Gardening
  • Fitness
  • Sports
  • Art
  • Yoga
  • Mindfulness
  • Culinary Kitchen
It was great day and in speaking with the kids afterwards they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had favourite experiences that they were excited to share with others.

Fall Food Drive

I had sent out an earlier email this week with regards to the Fall Food Bank Food Drive taking place at the school until Thursday, October 13th.  Students are encouraged to make any form of donation in support of the food bank.  As an incentive to donate, those students who bring in 5 items of food, any size, with receive a ballot to be entered into a draw for a prize.
